Dr. Maria Montessori was the founder of this revolutionary philosophy and teaching method. 

Born in Italy in the late 1800s, she initially trained as a physician. It was through the clinical observations that her profession allowed and the study of psychology and philosophy that Montessori developed the passion for helping children learn. 

She concluded that children learnt most effortlessly during their earliest years of development and that, in the right environment, they had the potential to teach themselves and meet their innate needs and potential. She left medicine and academia to pursue and build a pedagogy that facilitated this kind of learning – what we know today as the Montessori educational philosophy, which lives on in thousands of schools and educators across the world.
